IDPA requires us to regularly draw from concealment. The 2 basic types are open (such as a vest) or a closed garment (such as a pullover for buttoned shirt). John Holschen offers a couple of real nice examples of the mechanics involved with both kinds. Even though John starts from a fighting position with his hands, the basic principles he demonstrates works the same as we usually start our stages hands relaxed at side.

Note how well he executes the draw stroke. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out an earlier IDPA tip “The Draw Stroke” on our Lake County IDPA website. Also note his well executed one-handed re-holster.
Nothing stinks more at the start of a stage when the buzzer goes off and go to reach for a handful of steel (or plastic) and come up with handful of cotton.
Even though these examples are for the mechanics of technique, John offers a few real nice tactical tips as well. A good, smooth draw stroke from concealment takes much practice.
A mirror or video while practicing (unloaded weapon of course) is a great aid in practicing / training.
